Teaching in International Settings

This course aims to help lecturers to teach in an international setting successfully. We will discuss how content and methods of teaching and learning can be tailored to a diverse target group in order to use the potential of the diversity of students and teachers. We will also question our own (unconscious) beliefs that we as lecturers bring into the teaching process and look at diversity-sensitive communication.

In addition to theoretical input, the course includes interactive activities that encourage participants to reflect on their own teaching and share their own experiences. The aim is to develop a resource- and potential-oriented understanding of diversity, which implies that an appropriate and critical approach to diversity in an international setting can promote the professional and personal development of students. The workshop includes practising elements in communication and interaction with international students.

At the end of the course, participants will have developed an understanding of how to handle diversity appropriately in international teaching settings and will be able to design effective teaching and learning processes.

The participants will:

  • explore internationalisation and diversity in academic teaching and learning settings,
  • discuss obstacles and benefits of teaching in an international context,
  • consider how teaching can accommodate student diversity,
  • practise interaction and communication with international students,
  • develop ideas and ways of dealing with existing diversity in their own teaching.
